New Zealand’s Peters Calls for Stronger US Pacific Role

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters says the Pacific region is becoming more unsettled.

He wants the United States to play an active role there.

Peters says this could help countries improve their security and economies.

He is also concerned about drug trafficking and other organized crime.

He pointed to missile tests and naval exercises as signs of regional tension.

New Zealand has been working with Pacific island countries through aid, defense and diplomacy.

Peters welcomed a US support package announced in Palau worth $150 million.

China previously said its missile launch was a routine military exercise.

Peters made the comments before New Zealand’s November 7 election.
