Meta’s $18-Billion Child Safety Settlement Faces Praise and Criticism

Meta’s $18-Billion Child Safety Settlement Faces Praise and Criticism

Meta has agreed to pay nearly $18 billion because its platforms were accused of putting children’s privacy and safety at risk.

The company will have to add new limits for teenagers.

Young users under 18 will have a default two-hour daily limit.

Notifications will be silenced during school hours.

The platforms will also interrupt endless scrolling and improve parental controls.

Critics worry that children can still get around age checks by using false information or an adult’s account.

They also say some features, such as targeted advertising and private messaging, are not addressed enough.

Supporters believe the agreement could encourage stronger online-safety rules around the world.

Other proposed protections include better laws, independent checks, limits on collecting children’s data and mental-health help.
