Maharashtra Reports 14,526 Child Deaths
A minister in Maharashtra, India, told the government that 14,526 very young children, from babies to five-year-olds, have died in seven areas of the state over the last three years.
The minister also said that many children are not getting enough food, which makes them sick.
The government is trying to help by giving food to pregnant women and children who are very thin.
Additionally, the minister mentioned that a few more people died from Covid-19 this year compared to last year, even though there were fewer cases.
The state is also working to reduce malaria.
14,526 children aged 0-5 died in seven districts of Maharashtra over three years.
The data was provided by Maharashtra Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar in response to a query by BJP legislator Sneha Dubey.
The deaths include cases of severe malnutrition and infants admitted to government facilities.
The state has implemented various measures under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) to reduce malnutrition.
There was a marginal increase in Covid-19 deaths in 2025 despite fewer reported infections.
