India Mandates Cybersecurity App on Phones
The Indian government has ordered that all new smartphones must have a special cybersecurity app called Sanchar Saathi installed on them.
This app helps people check if their phone is real, report bad calls, and stop stolen phones from being used.
The government says this app is very important to keep phones safe from bad people who use fake phone numbers.
Big companies like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi have to put this app on their phones, but Apple might not like this rule because they usually don't let governments put apps on their phones before they are sold.
The app has already helped find more than 700,000 lost phones and stop millions of bad phone connections.
Some people might worry about their privacy, but the government says it's necessary to keep everyone's phones safe.
India's telecom ministry ordered smartphone makers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on all new devices.
The app cannot be deleted or disabled and helps verify IMEIs, report suspicious calls, and block stolen devices.
Manufacturers have 90 days to comply, with existing devices in the supply chain to receive the app via updates.
The app has helped recover over 700,000 lost or stolen phones and terminate more than 30 million fraudulent connections.
Apple may resist the directive due to its internal policies prohibiting pre-installation of government apps.
