Venezuela begins US-backed political transition talks in Caracas

Venezuela is a country in South America that has been having big problems with its government.

A while ago, soldiers from the United States took away Nicolas Maduro, the country's leader.

Now a new leader named Delcy Rodriguez is in charge.

This week, people from the government and people from the opposition—the group that disagrees with the government—started talking to each other.

They met at a military base in Caracas, the capital city.

These talks are meant to help fair elections come back and make the country more peaceful.

One very popular opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, lives in another country and was not invited to the talks.

Another opposition leader, Dinorah Figuera, came back from exile to join the meeting.

The people will also talk about helping after two big earthquakes in June that hurt many people.

The United States hopes the talks will lead to a peaceful change in Venezuela.
