Honda Loses Scooter Market Share Amidst Rising Competition
Honda used to be the king of scooters in India with its Activa bike, holding more than half the market.
But now, they are not selling as many scooters, and their share has dropped to less than 40%.
While the whole scooter market has grown a lot, Honda's sales haven't grown as much.
Other companies like TVS and Suzuki are selling more scooters and taking Honda's customers.
This is because these rivals are updating their scooters more often and keeping up with what customers want, while Honda's updates have been smaller.
Honda still relies heavily on the Activa, and some of its other scooter models have been stopped because they weren't popular.
Honda's market share in the Indian scooter segment has fallen from 52% in FY21 to below 40% (39% as of September 2025).
The overall domestic scooter market in India has grown by 49% from FY21 to FY25, while HMSI's volume growth was only 22% in the same period.
TVS Motor Company has increased its scooter market share from 20% in FY21 to nearly 30% by September 2025, driven by models like the Jupiter.
Suzuki has also grown its market share from 11% in FY21 to 15% by September 2025, with its Access model.
Market observers attribute Honda's decline to increased competition and a slower response to market updates, citing TVS's significant update to the Jupiter shortly before a milder update to Honda's Activa.
