BJP Escalates Pressure on Congress Over Vande Mataram Dispute
The Congress and BJP are arguing about how much of the song Vande Mataram should be sung at public events.
The Congress says singing the first two stanzas follows an old decision from the freedom movement.
The BJP says the entire song should be sung and accuses Congress of avoiding the other stanzas to appeal to Muslims.
BJP leaders also criticized Rahul Gandhi for holding a protest in Delhi.
They said his protest was meant to draw attention away from the song dispute.
Gandhi said the protest was about seeking an FIR over alleged pellet injuries to a young person.
The argument is happening while both parties are trying to win the support of students and other young voters.
Student concerns include exam paper leaks, unemployment and how protesters are treated.
The BJP attacked the Congress for supporting public renditions of only Vande Mataram’s first two stanzas.
Congress leaders cited a 1937 Congress Working Committee resolution and Mahatma Gandhi’s reported support for the limited practice.
JP Nadda accused Rahul Gandhi of using a sit-in over alleged pellet injuries to distract from the controversy.
Rajnath Singh called limiting the song to two stanzas unconstitutional, while Amit Shah backed full renditions at official programmes.
Both parties are seeking support from young voters amid student protests over exam leaks, unemployment and protest-related treatment.
