BMS Unit Calls Nationwide ‘Chalo Delhi’ Transport Workers’ Protest
A transport workers’ union has called for a protest in Delhi on November 19.
It says private transport workers need better support and protections.
The union wants the government to create a Welfare Board for drivers and workers.
It is also asking for lower insurance costs and a set toll fee for some vehicles.
Along highways, it wants places where drivers can rest, eat, drink water and get medical care.
The union also wants changes to auto-rickshaw licence renewals and an end to illegal collections by officials.
It has asked for February 6 to become National Drivers’ Day.
It also wants highway drivers on election duty to be able to vote by postal ballot.
The Bharatiya Private Transport Mazdoor Maha Sangh called for a nationwide protest at Jantar Mantar on November 19.
The union says the protest will press for the rights of private transport workers.
Its 10-point charter includes a drivers’ Welfare Board, a ban on commercial bikes with white number plates using digital platforms, and a 50% insurance discount.
Other demands include setting the annual FASTag toll fee at ₹73,500 for single-owner vehicles and providing highway rest houses, canteens, water and medical centres.
The union also wants auto-rickshaw licence renewals revived, illegal collections by officials stopped, February 6 declared National Drivers’ Day, and postal ballots for highway drivers on election duty.
