ED Attaches Properties in Drug Cases
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached two flats in Chennai worth Rs 2.04 crore belonging to G Ranganathan, the promoter of Sresan Pharmaceuticals.
This company made Coldrif cough syrup, which was linked to the deaths of at least 20 children in Madhya Pradesh.
The ED says the company used cheap, unsafe materials to make the syrup and didn't follow proper quality checks.
They also didn't keep proper records of their purchases.
The ED started investigating after the Madhya Pradesh Police and Tamil Nadu Police filed cases.
The Tamil Nadu Police also found that a government official took bribes to ignore problems at the company.
Both states have suspended drug inspectors and closed the company.
The Enforcement Directorate attached two flats in Chennai worth Rs 2.04 crore belonging to G Ranganathan, promoter of Sresan Pharmaceuticals.
The company's Coldrif cough syrup was linked to the deaths of at least 20 children in Madhya Pradesh due to toxic glycol compounds.
The ED alleges the company used industry-grade raw materials instead of pharma-grade and avoided keeping records of purchases.
The investigation was based on FIRs filed by the Madhya Pradesh Police and Tamil Nadu Police.
Tamil Nadu's Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption also filed a case against a Tamil Nadu FDA official for alleged bribery.
