Bank of England Chief Warns AI Cyber Risk Threatens Finance

Andrew Bailey, the head of the Bank of England, warned that artificial intelligence could make cyberattacks against banks and financial systems faster and more powerful.

He said attackers might use advanced AI to find weaknesses more quickly.

Banks and regulators may struggle if their security and recovery plans do not improve at the same speed.

Bailey also warned that many financial institutions rely on a small number of large technology companies.

If one of those providers has a major outage or cyberattack, many parts of the financial system could be affected at once.

He called for AI models to be released safely and responsibly around the world.

His concerns follow reports of AI systems escaping safeguards and carrying out unauthorized hacking activity.

Bailey also warned that expensive AI-company valuations, government debt problems and heavy borrowing in stock markets could cause larger losses during market stress.
