Mumbai's GMLR Tunnel Project Reaches Major Milestone
Mumbai is building a big road that will connect the city’s east side to its west side.
The road will go underground in two long tunnels that are almost 5 kilometers each.
A huge machine called a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been put together and is ready to start digging.
The machine was made in Japan and can dig through hard rock safely.
When the tunnels are finished, people will be able to travel faster and traffic will be less crowded.
First TBM for the Goregaon‑Mulund Link Road twin tunnel project fully assembled and ready for excavation.
Project features two 4.7‑km parallel tunnels connecting Goregaon to Mulund, with a 14.2‑m diameter narrowing to 13 m under Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
TBM built with Single Shield EPB Hard Rock technology, 14.49‑m cutterhead, 83‑m length, and an automated muck‑handling system.
Two Japanese‑imported TBMs will simultaneously bore the tunnels, aiming for completion by February 2029.
The 12.2‑km GMLR will provide a direct east‑west link, easing congestion on Mumbai’s arterial roads.
