Assam Linked to Ramayana and Mahabharata, Historian Says
A historian named Dr Sauradeep Nath talked on a podcast about how the state of Assam in India might be the same place that ancient stories like the Ramayana and Mahabharata talk about.
He said that the old kingdom called Pragjyotisha, which is mentioned in those stories, is now where Assam is.
The capital of that kingdom was near a famous temple called Kamakhya.
He also mentioned mythic rulers like Narakasura and Bhagadatta who appear in the Mahabharata.
Assam’s people have been living there for a very long time, even before the Ahom dynasty that ruled from the 13th to the 19th century.
The Ahom people came from Myanmar and built a long‑lasting kingdom that protected Assam from invaders.
So, the story shows that Assam has a deep history that is linked to big Indian epics.
Historian Dr Sauradeep Nath claims Assam corresponds to ancient kingdom Pragjyotisha mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Pragjyotisha’s capital, Pragjyotishpura, is associated with the Kamakhya Temple in present‑day Assam.
Mythic rulers Narakasura and Bhagadatta of Pragjyotisha appear in Mahabharata and Puranas.
Assam’s civilization predates the Ahom dynasty, which ruled from the 13th to 19th centuries.
The Ahom dynasty, founded by Sukaphaa from Myanmar, became one of India’s longest‑ruling dynasties.
