AI to Support One-Third of US Coding by 2024
By the end of 2024, about one-third of new computer code in the US is expected to be written with the help of AI.
This trend is also seen in other countries like Germany, France, and India.
Researchers looked at over 30 million pieces of Python code from developers on GitHub, the world's biggest coding platform.
They found that while AI helps a lot, the benefits mostly go to experienced programmers.
Beginners use AI more, but experienced programmers gain more in productivity.
AI not only helps with routine tasks but also helps experienced programmers learn new things faster.
This means AI might be making the gap between beginners and experts even bigger instead of making things more equal.
By the end of 2024, around one-third of newly written Python code in the US is expected to be AI-supported.
AI-supported coding is also high in Germany (23%), France (24%), and India (20%).
Researchers analyzed over 30 million Python contributions from 160,000 developers on GitHub.
Productivity gains from AI are higher for experienced programmers, with a 3.6% increase by the end of 2024.
Beginners use AI more (37% of their code) but gain less productivity compared to experienced programmers (27% of their code).
