4 cops suspended, charged with murder after Dalit youth's death in Bengaluru rehab

A 22-year-old man named Darshan P G died on November 26 at a rehabilitation centre in Bengaluru.

He was a Dalit and worked as an office boy.

The police had taken him into custody on November 12 for allegedly causing a public nuisance.

His mother requested that he be sent to a rehabilitation centre instead of jail because he was addicted to alcohol.

The police allegedly took money for his admission and sent him to the centre.

His mother called the centre daily but was never allowed to speak to him directly.

On November 26, she was told that Darshan had died.

The authorities claimed it was due to respiratory problems, but there were visible injury marks on his body.

The police have suspended four officers and the owner of the rehabilitation centre.

They have been charged with murder and wrongful confinement.

The case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
