Police say a man named Prem Singh Gond attacked members of his family with a stick in a village in Madhya Pradesh.
The attack happened on Saturday.
Four people died, including his mother and grandparents.
Four others were injured, including a village priest who had been hurt the night before.
Police say villagers had tied Gond up after that earlier incident, but his mother untied him before the family attack.
Police have taken him into custody and are investigating.
