Cabinet Approves Bill for Private Nuclear Power
The Indian government has approved a new bill called the SHANTI Bill, which will allow private companies to invest in nuclear power plants.
This means that private companies can own up to 49% of new nuclear projects.
The government wants to increase India's nuclear power capacity from less than 8 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts by 2047.
They also plan to build smaller, modular nuclear reactors called SMRs.
The bill will change two old laws to make it easier for private companies and foreign investors to join the nuclear power sector.
This is important because India needs more stable and clean energy sources to support its growing electricity needs.
The Indian government approved the SHANTI Bill to allow private sector participation in nuclear power projects.
Private companies can take up to a 49% equity stake in new nuclear projects.
India aims to increase its nuclear power capacity from under 8 GWe to 100 GWe by 2047.
The government plans to build five indigenously developed Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) by 2033.
The bill amends the Atomic Energy Act 1962 and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act 2010 to attract foreign investment and address baseload energy needs.
