Killing of Manipuri Musician Raises Questions About Belonging

Killing of Manipuri Musician Raises Questions About Belonging

Chongtham Vikram Singh was a musician and teacher from Manipur who lived in Delhi.

He was 54 years old.

Police and his family said he argued with men who were allegedly making noise and drinking outside his apartment.

He was attacked and later died in a hospital.

Seven men and a juvenile have been arrested.

Investigators still have to determine exactly what happened and why.

Police have not established that the attack was racially motivated.

However, many people from India’s North-east say they have faced insults, stereotypes and violence in big cities.

Singh’s family says it wants justice, not revenge.

The case has started a wider discussion about whether every Indian feels equally welcome in the capital.
