Malaysia Seeks Indonesia’s Help as Haze Chokes Kuala Lumpur

Smoke from wildfires in Indonesia has spread to Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia.

The haze made the air in Kuala Lumpur very unhealthy on Thursday.

Malaysia’s prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, spoke with Indonesia’s president, Prabowo Subianto, about responding to the problem.

Anwar said Prabowo agreed to take necessary steps, but did not explain what they would be.

Schools in Johor were closed for the rest of the week, affecting about 617,000 students.

The haze also reduced visibility enough to disrupt flights.

Malaysia wants to discuss sending a team to help fight the fires and bring regional environment ministers together.

Environmental groups are also asking for stronger laws to investigate and act against companies linked to pollution across borders.
