India Releases First-Ever Electric Tractor Standards
The Indian government has created new rules for electric tractors used in farming.
These rules, called IS 19262:2025, help make sure these tractors are safe and work well.
The rules cover different tests to check things like how powerful the tractor is and how it handles vibrations.
Electric tractors are better for the environment because they don't use diesel, which means they produce less pollution.
They also cost less to run and are easier to maintain.
Many different groups, including tractor makers and experts, helped create these rules to make sure they are good for everyone.
The new rules are voluntary, but they will help farmers and buyers trust that electric tractors are reliable.
Right now, very few electric tractors are sold in India compared to diesel ones, partly because there aren't enough places to charge them in rural areas.
The Indian government has introduced the first-ever testing standard for electric agricultural tractors, IS 19262:2025, to ensure their safety, reliability, and performance.
The standard includes tests for power take-off output, drawbar power, belt and pulley performance, vibration levels, and specification verification.
Electric tractors offer benefits like lower emissions, reduced noise, and lower operating and maintenance costs compared to diesel tractors.
The standard was developed with inputs from tractor manufacturers, testing agencies, research institutions, and farmer organizations, including ICAR institutes and farm machinery testing centers.
Only 26 electric tractors have been sold in India so far this fiscal year, compared to about 500,000 diesel tractors, due to challenges like inadequate charging infrastructure in rural areas.
