Tamil Nadu Turtle Nesting Season Sees Record Success
Imagine turtles laying lots of eggs on the beach.
In Tamil Nadu, India, this year, wildlife officials found a record number of eggs and helped baby turtles hatch and go into the sea.
They collected over 179,000 eggs and released more than 160,000 hatchlings.
They also made sure fishermen didn't accidentally hurt the turtles.
They are also using an app to keep track of everything.
This success is because they are being more careful about how they fish and protecting the turtles' homes.
Scientists are also studying where the turtles go so they can help them even more.
Tamil Nadu saw record numbers of turtle eggs collected and hatchlings released.
Wildlife officials collected 113,933 eggs and released 106,595 hatchlings in Cuddalore.
Chennai wildlife division collected 65,649 eggs and released 54,917 hatchlings.
Increased enforcement of fishing regulations contributed to reducing turtle fatalities.
The forest department launched a Tamil Nadu Turtle Guardian app for monitoring.
