Kharge Calls Delhi Protest Crackdown an ‘Undeclared Emergency’

A youth-led protest took place in Delhi on October 10.

The protest organizers wanted the Chief Election Commissioner to resign over claimed problems with voter lists.

Police detained nearly 2,500 people, according to Delhi Police, and security forces and restrictions were deployed across parts of the city.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the government was unfairly limiting people’s rights.

Police said the detentions were meant to keep order.

Kharge and Rahul Gandhi asked to meet the Chief Justice of India on Monday to share their concerns.

Gandhi said protesters and opposition groups planned to return to the streets.

Kharge also accused the Election Commission’s independence and accountability of being weakened, while the Commission has rejected vote-theft allegations.
