MedGenome Launches Blood Test to Detect Residual Cancer

MedGenome has introduced a blood test called OncoTrack MRD for people who have already been treated for cancer.

It looks for tiny pieces of cancer DNA in the blood.

First, doctors use the person’s tumour and blood to create a special genetic fingerprint.

Later tests only need a blood sample to look for that fingerprint.

The test is meant for cancers such as breast, colorectal, lung, ovarian and pancreatic cancer.

It may find signs of cancer earlier than scans can detect a larger tumour.

However, a positive result does not prove that cancer will return, and a negative result does not guarantee that it will not.

Doctors must consider the result together with scans, cancer type, stage and treatment history.
