Akali-BJP Student Wings Tie Up Ahead of University Polls
Two student groups linked to different political parties have decided to work together at Panjab University.
ABVP is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party, while SOI is backed by the Shiromani Akali Dal.
They announced their agreement one day before the university’s student elections.
SOI cannot run its presidential candidate because the nomination was rejected over an eligibility dispute.
Instead, SOI will ask its supporters to back ABVP candidates.
This could help ABVP in a close election.
The agreement has attracted attention because SAD and BJP were once political allies and may reunite.
However, the student agreement does not prove that the two main parties have settled their disagreements.
ABVP and SAD-backed SOI announced an alliance at Panjab University on Sunday, one day before PUCSC polling.
SOI will support ABVP candidates and mobilise its supporters in Monday’s campus elections.
SOI is not contesting the presidential election after its candidate’s nomination papers were rejected over an eligibility dispute.
The arrangement could strengthen ABVP in a closely fought presidential contest by adding SOI’s organisational support and potential votes.
The campus pact comes amid speculation about a possible SAD-BJP reunion but does not establish that the parent parties have resolved their differences.

Pact Signals Wider Cooperation
Campus Arrangement Has Limited Meaning
Political significance
Pact Signals Wider Cooperation
The alliance shows that networks associated with SAD and BJP can cooperate when they share an electoral objective, potentially offering a preview of wider cooperation.
Campus Arrangement Has Limited Meaning
The arrangement was driven by the university contest and SOI’s rejected nomination; it does not demonstrate that SAD and BJP have reached a political understanding.
Impact on the election
Pact Signals Wider Cooperation
SOI’s organisational network and supporters could give ABVP an important advantage in a closely fought presidential contest.
Campus Arrangement Has Limited Meaning
The actual effect will depend on whether SOI can translate its announced support into votes for ABVP during Monday’s polling.

The tie-up adds to discussion about whether SAD and BJP could reunite before the next Punjab Assembly elections, especially after Bikram Singh Majithia publicly discussed the prospect.
