Supreme Court to Clarify CBI Powers Over Sitting Chief Ministers

Supreme Court to Clarify CBI Powers Over Sitting Chief Ministers

The Enforcement Directorate says its officers were stopped while searching an office in Kolkata.

The search was connected to an alleged coal pilferage case.

The agency says Mamata Banerjee and senior West Bengal officials interfered with the search.

It wants the Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, to investigate what happened.

Banerjee’s lawyer said the change in government might help resolve the dispute.

But the ED asked the Supreme Court to answer a bigger legal question.

That question is whether the CBI can investigate a chief minister who is also the state’s home minister.

The Supreme Court will hear the matter again on September 2.
