India's Proactive Approach to AI and Digital Economy

India's Proactive Approach to AI and Digital Economy

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the IT Minister of India, said that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) is still in its early stages, like the first innings of a cricket match.

He believes that smaller AI models, which can run on regular laptops, are becoming more popular and useful.

These models can solve many problems for big companies without needing expensive computer systems.

The minister also talked about how technology changes quickly, like how personal computers replaced mainframes.

He thinks AI will keep changing fast.

The Economic Survey of India also supports using smaller AI models for specific problems in areas like healthcare, farming, and education.

This approach uses India's strengths in people, data, and coordination.

The survey says AI should be used to solve real problems, not just for advanced experiments.

The survey also highlights the potential of the digital economy, including the growth of data centres and the need to address social issues like digital addiction and mental health problems caused by smartphones and social media.

The government is planning to introduce age-based restrictions on social media usage to tackle these issues.

Additionally, the survey emphasizes the importance of technology sovereignty and proactive measures to handle the AI wave, indicating that India will be prepared for the disruptions caused by AI.
