India’s Government Jobs Draw Crores, But Few Are Selected

Many people in India want government jobs because they are seen as secure and well supported.

Government workers usually keep their jobs until retirement after completing probation.

They may also receive regular raises, medical benefits, housing support and retirement benefits.

But there are far fewer vacancies than applicants.

Several crore people apply for central government jobs each year, while about 1.20 lakh are selected.

Different agencies conduct tests for different kinds of jobs.

The Union Public Service Commission selects many senior officers, while the Staff Selection Commission selects many clerical and support workers.

State governments have their own agencies, but exam cancellations and paper leaks have caused anger among applicants.
