GTA Urges Pension for Aged Tea Workers
Anit Thapa, the head of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), has asked the state government to create a pension plan for tea workers who are 58 years or older and work in closed tea estates.
Currently, these workers receive ₹1,500 per month under the Fawloi scheme, but they lose this benefit once they turn 58.
Thapa believes a pension would help these workers live with dignity.
The state has recently added four closed tea estates to the Fawloi scheme, benefiting over 2,900 workers.
This move is seen as a way for the BGPM, a political ally, to connect with tea workers ahead of elections.
GTA CEO Anit Thapa urges state government to introduce pension for tea workers aged 58+ in closed estates.
Current Fawloi scheme provides ₹1,500/month but ends at age 58.
