BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary Highlights Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy at UN
Imagine countries talking to each other not just through their official diplomats, but also through their lawmakers, like members of parliament.
This is called 'parliamentary diplomacy'.
A lawmaker from India, P.P. Chaudhary, recently went to the United Nations with other Indian MPs.
He thinks this kind of talk can help fix big world problems at the UN faster.
He said that lawmakers in each country often decide how much money their country gives to the UN.
So, if they talk directly at the UN, they can better discuss important changes, like making the UN Security Council fairer.
He believes this teamwork between different countries' lawmakers and their usual diplomats is good for everyone and helps make the UN stronger.
The Indian delegation also spoke about issues like Jammu and Kashmir and celebrated the use of Hindi at the UN.
BJP MP P.P. Chaudhary led India's first non-official delegation to the UN General Assembly in 13 years.
Chaudhary emphasized 'parliamentary diplomacy' as a means to accelerate UN reforms, especially concerning the Security Council.
He stated that national legislatures' role in UN funding gives parliamentarians a natural voice in reform discussions.
The delegation attended meetings and debates, with Chaudhary addressing the need for Security Council reform and responding to Pakistan's statement on J&K.
A second delegation of MPs is scheduled to visit the UN, indicating a continuation of this diplomatic approach.
