Judge grants DOJ request to dismiss Oath Keepers cases

In January 2021, a big crowd went into the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., to stop the government from counting election votes.

Some members of a group called the Oath Keepers were arrested and found guilty of planning to stop the change of power after the election.

A judge named Amit Mehta said they were guilty in trials that happened in 2022 and 2023.

Later, a new president, Donald Trump, decided to forgive nearly all 1,600 people who were in trouble for that day.

He also told the Justice Department to drop the cases that were still going on.

The Justice Department asked Judge Mehta to dismiss the cases, and the judge said yes.

The judge was sad about it, though.

He wrote that the decision makes the attack seem less serious and is unfair to the police and prosecutors who did their jobs.

The judge said he had to let the cases go because the Justice Department has the power to drop them.
