Hate Speech Rises in Coastal Karnataka Amid Decline in Moral Policing
In the coastal regions of Karnataka, there has been a big increase in hate speech, especially on social media, while incidents of moral policing have gone down.
A report by an activist named Suresh Bhat shows that there were 142 communal incidents in 2025, which is a lot more than the 50 cases in 2024.
Most of these incidents were related to hate speech, with 110 cases in 2025 compared to just 27 in 2024.
The report also shows that moral policing incidents have decreased significantly, from 23 in 2024 to just 8 in 2025.
The data suggests that while some types of communal activities are decreasing, others, like online hate speech, are becoming more common.
Hate speech incidents in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts surged to 110 in 2025 from 27 in 2024.
Moral policing incidents declined sharply from 23 in 2024 to 8 in 2025.
Online hate speech accounted for 74 of the total 142 communal incidents in 2025.
Hindu and Muslim fundamentalist groups were involved in most hate speech incidents.
The report includes data on various types of communal incidents, including religious conversion and cattle vigilantism.
