India Pushes for UNSC Permanent Seat Through Global Consensus

India Pushes for UNSC Permanent Seat Through Global Consensus

The United Nations Security Council helps countries deal with wars, sanctions and peacekeeping.

It currently has five permanent members with veto powers.

India, Brazil, Germany and Japan are asking for the Council to be changed.

They say the current structure is old and does not fairly represent today’s world.

India says it could speak for many developing countries.

Former diplomat Suresh Goel says India should receive the same powers as other permanent members.

This includes having a veto, rather than being placed in a weaker category.

India still needs support from many countries and from the existing permanent members.

China’s position may be changing slightly, so India wants to persuade it to support the bid.
