Mid-Cap vs Small-Cap Funds: Long-Term Alpha Favors Small-Caps

Mid-Cap vs Small-Cap Funds: Long-Term Alpha Favors Small-Caps

This analysis compares mid-cap and small-cap mutual funds with the benchmarks they are measured against.

Over three years, mid-cap funds performed slightly better than small-cap funds.

Over five years, small-cap funds moved ahead.

Over 10 years, small-cap funds had a much stronger record of beating their benchmark.

Twelve of 13 small-cap funds beat their benchmark over 10 years, compared with 10 of 20 mid-cap funds.

However, only funds with long enough histories were included in the longer comparisons.

Small-cap funds can also be more volatile and may fall sharply during difficult markets.

Past performance does not guarantee that either category will perform the same way in the future.

Investors should consider risk, consistency, time horizon and their ability to handle losses.
