Trump Urges Companies to Advance Ambitious Golden Dome Shield
Donald Trump wants the United States to build a large missile-defense system called Golden Dome.
It would try to spot missiles and destroy them before they reach the country.
The plan could use land-based equipment, satellites and possibly weapons in space.
Several defense and technology companies may help build its different parts.
Supporters see it as an important national-security project.
The plan could be very expensive, and lawmakers have not finalized all its funding.
China and Russia worry that weapons in space could increase military tensions.
Canada is discussing whether it could participate.
Donald Trump is asking U.S. companies to help develop the nationwide Golden Dome missile-defense system.
The proposed network would combine ground-based defenses, satellites, sensors and potentially space-based interceptors.
Lockheed Martin, L3Harris Technologies, RTX, SpaceX, Palantir and Anduril have been linked to possible roles.
Republican lawmakers have proposed $25 billion initially, while a Congressional Budget Office estimate puts a version’s 20-year cost at $1.2 trillion.
China and Russia say the project could destabilize space, while Canada has discussed participation with Washington.

- U.S. President Donald Trump, American defense and technology companies, lawmakers, and potentially Canada are involved.
- What
- The administration is pursuing Golden Dome, a layered missile-defense network intended to detect and intercept threats.
- When
- Trump wants the system fully operational before the end of his second term.
- Where
- The planned network would protect the United States and could include capabilities in outer space.
- Why
- Trump has presented the project as a central part of his national-security agenda and wants protection against incoming missiles.
Administration and Industry Case
Critics and Opponents
Strategic purpose
Administration and Industry Case
Trump presents Golden Dome as a central national-security initiative designed to detect and intercept missiles before they reach the United States.
Critics and Opponents
China and Russia say deploying interceptors in orbit could destabilize international security and turn outer space into a military confrontation zone.
Technology and feasibility
Administration and Industry Case
The administration plans to combine existing missile-defense technologies with newer space-based capabilities, while Lockheed Martin describes a layered system of sensors, tracking and interceptors.
Critics and Opponents
The project remains technically difficult, and analysts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies have warned it could contribute to an arms race in space.
Cost and funding
Administration and Industry Case
Republican lawmakers have proposed an initial $25 billion allocation, and Pentagon officials dispute the assumptions behind the Congressional Budget Office's larger estimate.
Critics and Opponents
Funding remains uncertain, political obstacles could delay the proposed allocation, and the Congressional Budget Office has estimated that a version could cost about $1.2 trillion over 20 years.
- Proposed system
- A nationwide, multi-layered missile-defense network using ground systems, satellites and potentially space-based interceptors.
- Target timeline
- Trump wants Golden Dome fully operational before the end of his second term.
- Potential companies
- Lockheed Martin, L3Harris Technologies, RTX, SpaceX, Palantir and Anduril have been identified as possible participants.
- Proposed initial funding
- Republican lawmakers have proposed $25 billion within a broader $150 billion defense package.
- Long-term cost estimate
- The Congressional Budget Office previously estimated that a version could cost about $1.2 trillion over 20 years.
- International concerns
- China and Russia have described the project as destabilizing and warned about weapons operating in space.
- Canadian involvement
- Canada has confirmed discussions with Washington about strengthening NORAD and related initiatives, including Golden Dome.
