Cheetahs and Leopards: Key Differences in Appearance and Behavior
Cheetahs and leopards are both spotted wild cats, but they are built differently.
A cheetah has simple round spots, while a leopard has flower-like rosettes.
Cheetahs also have black lines running from their eyes to their mouths.
Cheetahs are slim and have long legs for running very fast.
Leopards are stronger, heavier and better at climbing trees.
Cheetahs chase prey in open grasslands during the day.
Leopards usually hide, get close and surprise their prey.
Leopards may carry food into trees, while cheetahs need to eat quickly before stronger animals take it.
Cheetahs have solid black spots, while leopards have rosettes with broken circles and often darker centres.
Cheetahs have distinctive black tear marks, slender bodies and long legs; leopards are muscular, compact and heavy-chested.
Cheetahs have semi-non-retractable claws for traction, while leopards have fully retractable claws suited to climbing and gripping prey.
Cheetahs hunt by sprinting across open landscapes and can reach speeds of around 112 km/h; leopards ambush prey using stealth and cover.
After a kill, leopards can drag carcasses into trees, while cheetahs often eat quickly because they are more vulnerable to competitors.
