India Updates: Chenab Rescue, NDA Weighs Joint 2029 Polls
Heavy rain caused the Chenab river to rise quickly in Akhnoor, Jammu and Kashmir.
Three men became stranded on the river.
Police, Army personnel and the State Disaster Response Force worked together to rescue them.
Delhi also received heavy rain, which cooled the weather but caused flooding on some roads.
Separately, the NDA is discussing whether many state elections should happen at the same time as the 2029 national election.
The plan could cover 22 states and union territories.
This would be earlier than the 2034 timeline mentioned in bills passed by Parliament.
The final choice will depend on the NDA chief ministers and involves both political and constitutional questions.
Three men stranded on the swollen Chenab river in Akhnoor were rescued after heavy rain caused water levels to rise suddenly.
Police, Army personnel and the State Disaster Response Force conducted the joint rescue operation on August 23, 2026.
Heavy rain in parts of Delhi brought temporary relief from heat but caused waterlogging in several areas.
The NDA is considering holding elections in 22 states and union territories alongside the 2029 Lok Sabha election.
The proposal would advance the joint-election timeline from 2034, but NDA chief ministers will ultimately decide.
