Samudra Mahal: From Maharaja's Treasure to Elite Address
A long time ago, a young king named Madho Maharaj Scindia owned a lot of treasure.
He built a beautiful palace called Samudra Mahal in Mumbai.
After he passed away, the palace was torn down.
Later, his family built a tall, fancy building in the same place.
Today, it's one of the most expensive places to live in Mumbai.
The story shows how Mumbai changed from a place with royal palaces to a city with modern buildings.
Madho Maharaj Scindia, the Gwalior Maharaja, purchased 20 acres of sea-facing land in Worli, Mumbai in 1886.
He built a grand palace named Samudra Mahal on this land to stay close to the business hub of Bombay.
The Maharaja's will instructed that the palace should never be sold.
After India's independence, the palace was demolished in the 1950s-1960s due to the declining power of royal families.
The current Samudra Mahal is a modern residential tower built on the same land, known as one of Mumbai's most exclusive addresses.
