Odisha Hospital Liver Transplant Service Faces Dysfunction
The liver transplant service at a government hospital in Odisha is not working right now.
The hospital had agreements with two other hospitals to help with these transplants, but one of the agreements has ended.
A couple of transplants have been done, but there were some problems.
Another hospital that already helps with heart transplants wants to start helping with liver and bone marrow transplants, too.
The local hospital is also setting up a special team to try to restart the liver transplant service.
Before a transplant, doctors check the patient and donor carefully, then they need permission to do the surgery.
Liver transplant service at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Odisha is dysfunctional.
Two hospitals, AIG Hyderabad and Aster CMI Bengaluru, had MoUs with SCBMCH for liver transplants in 2023.
The MoU with AIG expired on April 1, 2025.
Two liver transplants were performed; one patient recovered, the other died from complications.
MGM Chennai, with an existing heart transplant MoU, is seeking to expand its services to include liver and bone marrow transplants.
