MHADA to Redevelop 388 Dilapidated South Mumbai Buildings
There are 388 old and worn-out buildings in South Mumbai that need to be fixed.
These buildings are home to over 27,000 families.
For a long time, private companies were supposed to fix these buildings, but they didn't want to because the buildings are too small and it's hard to get everyone to agree.
Now, the government agency called MHADA has said they will take care of the repairs if the buildings' residents ask them to.
This is good news for many people who live in these buildings.
However, there are still some other old buildings that need fixing, but those projects are stuck because of rules and lawsuits.
MHADA to redevelop 388 ageing buildings in South Mumbai after private developers backed out.
Buildings are home to over 27,000 families and are located in key areas like Colaba and Mahim.
Private developers found the buildings commercially unviable due to small plot sizes and lack of consensus among residents.
MHADA will undertake redevelopment if groups of buildings jointly pass resolutions requesting it.
The association is pushing for the Mini-Cluster Redevelopment Policy to be extended to Mumbai, which would make more buildings eligible for redevelopment.
