Meghalaya’s Beauty Faces Questions After Violent Shillong Rally

Meghalaya’s Beauty Faces Questions After Violent Shillong Rally

Meghalaya is known for its mountains, forests, waterfalls and distinctive culture.

Shillong is its capital and a place many people want to visit.

On 19 August 2026, a group called the Khasi Students’ Union held a motorcycle rally there.

The group was protesting government decisions about indigenous rights, migration, jobs and a cement project.

Reports said that some people at the rally damaged vehicles and property and allegedly attacked people.

Statues of Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were also reported to have been damaged.

Three senior union leaders were arrested in connection with the violence.

The article says peaceful protests are democratic, but violence and threats can make residents and visitors feel unsafe.

It argues that Meghalaya should protect Khasi identity while treating non-tribal residents as equal citizens.
