SC seeks response on plea for CBI probe into data breach
Some very important judges in India, called the Supreme Court, are looking into a big problem where private health information was stolen.
More than 1.5 lakh people — that is 150,000 people — had their medical records and personal details taken without permission.
This information included things like Aadhaar numbers, PAN numbers and health records.
The stolen information was reportedly sent to a computer server in another country, Singapore.
A lawyer asked the Supreme Court to order a special police team, the CBI, to investigate.
The court agreed to ask the government and the states to share their side of the story.
The police were told about the problem in March 2025, but only registered a case in August 2025.
The case is still against unknown people, even though details were given.
The judges also said the country's computer-crime law, the Information Technology Act, might need to be updated.
The case will be heard again later.
The Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre and concerned States on a petition seeking a CBI investigation into an alleged large-scale medical data breach.
The personal and medical records of more than 1.5 lakh Indian citizens were allegedly transferred to a server based in Singapore.
The Bench observed that offences under the Information Technology Act may require fresh legislative review, and had earlier asked the Solicitor General to examine amendments.
Complaints about the breach were lodged as early as March 2025, but the police registered an FIR only in August 2025 against unknown persons.
The plea alleges that companies promoted by Bessemer Venture Partners — Remedinet Technologies, IHX, Medi Assist and Perfios — were linked to the incident.
