India Sets Record September Sugar Quota to Curb Prices

India Sets Record September Sugar Quota to Curb Prices

The Indian government wants sugar prices to come down.

It told sugar mills to sell a very large amount of sugar in September.

The total September quota is 26.5 lakh tonnes, the highest ever for that month.

Officials hope this will help shoppers before the Dussehra festival.

Mills must sell part of their assigned sugar quickly and send it out within seven days.

Some millers said they sold their full quotas, while others said the sugar was picked up later than the sale date.

The government will not allow unused first-fortnight quotas to carry forward.

It is also asking mills that sold too little or too much to explain themselves.

Retail sugar prices had already fallen below ₹60 per kilogram.
