Odisha Amends Lokayukta Law Before Appointments
The government in Odisha is changing a law to make it easier to choose the head and members of a group that fights corruption.
This group, called the Lokayukta, has been without leaders for over a year.
The changes are about who gets to pick these leaders.
Right now, the Chief Minister and a few other important people, like the Leader of the Opposition and a judge, make this decision together.
The government wants to make sure this process is better before they pick new leaders.
The BJP government in Odisha is amending the Odisha Lokayukta Act, 2014.
The amendments relate to the selection committee for appointing the chairperson and members of the Lokayukta.
The positions of chairperson and members have been vacant for over a year.
The selection committee is currently headed by the Chief Minister and includes the Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition, the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court or a nominated judge, and one eminent jurist.
The amendments aim to modify the composition or process of the selection committee before new appointments are made.
