68,827 Amrit Sarovars Built or Rejuvenated Across India: Govt
The government of India is doing a big project to save water.
The project is called Mission Amrit Sarovar.
People have built or fixed up 68,827 ponds, called Amrit Sarovars, across the country.
These ponds store rainwater and help water soak into the ground.
The project was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 24, 2022.
More than 24 lakh trees and plants have been planted around the ponds.
Villagers, including women's self-help groups, help look after the ponds.
Computers and satellites are used to watch over the ponds and check how they are doing.
Even though there was less rain, ponds got bigger and fewer ponds dried up.
This helps farmers, plants, animals and people in villages.
The Centre said 68,827 Amrit Sarovars have been constructed or rejuvenated across the country for water conservation, groundwater recharge, irrigation, fisheries, biodiversity enhancement and livelihood activities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Mission Amrit Sarovar on April 24, 2022, with the objective of conserving water for future generations.
Over 24 lakh trees and plants have been planted around the Amrit Sarovars to improve green cover and ecological sustainability.
The mission's impact is being monitored through BhuPRAHARI, an artificial intelligence and satellite-based monitoring system, along with the Amrit Sarovar water observatory.
Analysis for 2022-24 showed average pond surface area increased by 16.3 per cent while the number of dry ponds declined by 42 per cent despite reduced rainfall.
