Indian-German Climber, Sherpa Guide Killed on Manaslu
Dhrubajyoti Guha and Fursemba Sherpa were climbing Mount Manaslu in Nepal.
Guha was an Indian-origin climber who lived in Germany.
Sherpa was an experienced Nepalese mountain guide.
The pair moved from Camp 2 to Camp 3 even though the weather was worsening.
Six other climbers chose to go back to a lower camp.
An avalanche struck the pair’s tent overnight on Saturday.
Rescuers found them under about seven feet of snow on Sunday.
More snow and the risk of another avalanche made it too dangerous to bring their bodies down.
Guha had completed many difficult trail races, while Sherpa had climbed Mount Everest nine times.
The deaths brought the autumn season toll on Manaslu to four.
Dhrubajyoti Guha, 47, and Nepali guide Fursemba Sherpa, 47, died in an avalanche at Mount Manaslu’s Camp 3.
The pair continued upward from Camp 2 despite deteriorating weather, while six other climbers retreated.
Rescuers found both men inside their tent, buried beneath nearly seven feet of snow.
Continuous snowfall and avalanche danger prevented teams from bringing the bodies to base camp.
Guha was a Germany-based mechanical engineer and ultra-endurance trail runner; Sherpa had summited Everest nine times.
