Former Journalist Revives Native Rice Varieties in TN Villages
M J Prabu, a former journalist, started the Green Cause Foundation to help farmers in Tamil Nadu grow and conserve 13 native rice varieties.
These rice types are special because they are resistant to diseases and pests, and they require fewer chemicals.
Prabu, who used to write about farming, now works directly with farmers to set up community seed banks.
These seed banks help farmers share and grow these traditional rice varieties.
A global research group, Bioversity International, is helping Prabu by providing technical support and connecting farmers to markets.
So far, about 800 farmers in 30 villages are part of this effort, and they are seeing good results even in tough weather conditions.
This project not only helps farmers but also keeps important rice varieties alive for future generations.
M J Prabu, a former journalist, founded the Green Cause Foundation in 2014 to revive indigenous paddy varieties in Tamil Nadu.
The foundation works with 800 farmers across 30 villages, conserving 13 native rice varieties through nine community seed banks.
Bioversity International collaborates with the foundation, providing technical support and market linkages for the farmers.
The native rice varieties are resistant to diseases and pests, requiring fewer chemicals and adapting well to climate stress.
The initiative aims to promote sustainable agriculture, improve farmer resilience, and connect farmers directly with buyers for better prices.
