Subhash Ghai Calls Bollywood a 'Big Insult' to Indian Cinema Legends
Imagine someone comparing your favorite local artist to a huge global superstar.
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai feels the same way when people compare India's Bollywood movies to Hollywood movies.
He says it's like saying Indian movies are just copies and it's disrespectful to the amazing Indian filmmakers and stories from the past, like Guru Dutt.
Ghai believes that Indian movies, in all the different languages, are special and should be celebrated for their own art and culture.
He wants people to talk about and appreciate Indian cinema for what it is, rather than always comparing it to Hollywood.
He even noticed a film festival backdrop that correctly highlighted regional industries above general terms like 'polywood' or 'bollywood', which he felt was a positive step.
He hopes this leads to more respect for Indian filmmaking.
Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai has strongly objected to comparing Bollywood with Hollywood.
He stated that such comparisons are a 'big insult' to the legends of Indian cinema like Dadasaheb Phalke and Guru Dutt.
Ghai emphasized that Indian cinema, across all its languages, deserves respect for its unique art, culture, and storytelling.
He noted that the term 'Bollywood' itself implies being a copycat of Hollywood, which he sees as an offense to Hindi cinema's heritage.
