Alert Issued on Illegal Import of Refurbished HDDs
Some companies were secretly bringing in old computer hard drives and pretending they were new.
These drives, mostly coming through Hyderabad, were used and then sold as if they were unused, which is against the rules.
The government is worried because these old drives might not work well, and could even cause problems with important information.
Customs officials are now investigating to stop these fake drives from being sold.
One company, Seagate, said they didn't sell the fake drives themselves and want people to buy only from trusted sellers to make sure they get the real thing.
DGFT alerted CBIC about illegal imports of refurbished HDDs by unregistered vendors.
Over 90% of these imports were routed through Hyderabad.
The estimated value of the imported drives exceeds 800 crore.
Imports violated Foreign Trade Policy, as they lacked required authorization.
HDDs were sold through open markets and public procurement platforms.
