BMC Elections: Activists Struggle, Mayor Lottery Awaited
In the recent BMC elections in Mumbai, many grassroots activists and independent candidates tried to win by using their strong connections with local communities.
However, most of them did not get enough votes to win.
Some got very few votes, even fewer than the 'None of the Above' option.
Experts say that having support from a political party and a lot of money for campaigning is very important to win elections.
Even some activists who had party support did not win.
A few did well, like Taruna Kumbhar who got 4213 votes, but most struggled.
The mayor of Mumbai will be decided by a lottery system to ensure fair representation among different social groups.
The Congress party, which allied with other parties, got its lowest number of seats ever, while the BJP and Shiv Sena won a majority.
Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad said there were problems in the elections, like pressure on candidates and money being given to influence votes.
She asked party workers to keep working at the grassroots level even if they didn't win.
Grassroots activists and independent candidates largely failed to secure significant votes in BMC elections.
Most independent candidates received fewer than 1,000 votes, with some even trailing behind NOTA votes.
Party-affiliated activists also struggled, with notable candidates like Deepak Silan (AAP) and Gladys Shriyan (Congress) receiving modest votes.
Experts highlight the importance of institutional support, party affiliation, and campaign machinery in winning elections.
A few activists, such as Taruna Kumbhar (AAP), performed notably but still did not win.
