Countries Fall Short of UN Biodiversity Protection Targets

Countries Fall Short of UN Biodiversity Protection Targets

Nearly 200 countries agreed to protect 30% of the world’s land and seas by 2030.

This plan is called “30 by 30.”

New research says countries are making progress, but not fast enough.

About 20% of land and 10% of marine areas are currently covered by protection measures.

Current promises could increase those figures to 26% and 13% by 2030.

Countries also promised to help provide $200 billion each year for biodiversity.

Researchers say there is still a yearly funding gap of $75 billion to $150 billion.

They also warn that putting an area on a map does not always mean it is truly protected.
