DDA approves land-use change for MCD's Ghazipur waste-to-energy plant

The city of Delhi makes a lot of garbage every single day — about 12,847 tonnes.

Some of this garbage is old and has been sitting in huge piles called landfills for years.

But the new garbage from people's homes is wet and mixed, so it is harder to deal with.

To help, the Delhi Development Authority said yes to a new machine that turns waste into energy.

The plant will be built on a 10-acre piece of land in a place called Ghazipur.

Half of the land will be used to process fresh garbage, and the other half will make biogas, which is a kind of gas that can be used for energy.

This new plant will be able to handle at least 800 tonnes of garbage every day.

It is one of five new plants planned across Delhi that can handle up to 5,900 tonnes of waste daily.

The goal is to stop piling new garbage on the landfills so the old piles can be made smaller and the city can be cleaner.
